He said I was in my early forties
With a lot of life before me
When a moment came
That stopped me on a dime
And I spent most of the next days
Looking at the x-rays
And talking 'bout the options,
Talking 'bout sweet time
And I asked him when it sank in
That this might really be the end
How's it hit ya
When you get that kind of news
Man, what'd you do (he said)

[Chorus:]
I went sky diving
I went rocky mountain climbing
I went two point seven seconds
On a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
And he said one day I hope you get a chance
To live like you were dying

He said I was finally the husband
That most the time I wasn't
And I became a friend
A friend would like to have
And all of a sudden going fishin'
Wasn't such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad
And I finally read the good book
And I took a good long hard look
At what I'd do if I could do it all again...
And then

[Chorus]
I went sky diving
I went rocky mountain climbing
I went two point seven seconds
On a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
And he said one day I hope you get a chance
To live like you were dying

Like tomorrow was a gift
And you've got eternity to think
Of what you did with it
What you did with it... what did I do with it

[Chorus]
I went sky diving
I went rocky mountain climbing
I went two point seven seconds
On a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
And I watched an eagle as it was flying
And he said someday I hope you get a chance
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying...

Song facts

"Live Like You Were Dying" is a song by American country music artist Tim McGraw which appears on his Live Like You Were Dying album. It reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard country music charts, and held that position for a total of seven weeks. In addition, it was named as the Number One country song of 2004 by Billboard.

"Live Like You Were Dying" tells the story of a man in his early forties who gets the news that his father has an unspecified, life threatening illness. His father's message is to live life to the fullest and do things that he had always wanted to do, such as skydiving, mountain climbing, fishing, and bull riding. He also says that he became a better husband and friend. McGraw then switches perspective to himself, talking about how going fishing with his dad stopped being an imposition and how he finally read the Bible, and took his fathers advice by going skydiving, mountain climbing, and bull riding.

This song is associated with McGraw's father, Tug McGraw, who was hospitalized with a brain tumor on March 12, 2003. It was revealed that he had cancer. He was given three weeks to live by the doctors, but survived nine months. He died on January 5, 2004.

The music video features Tim McGraw singing in a white background with video clips, and was directed by Sherman Halsey, McGraw's usual director of choice. The end of the music video shows the clip where the elder McGraw pitched the final strike for the 1980 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, which, at the time, was the team's only World Series Championship.
