Martina McBride - "Teenage Daughters" Lyrics

I ain't complainin' but I'm tired
So I'm just sayin' what I think
And if we're bein' honest and honestly
I think I need a drink

My baby's growin' up,
She thinks she's fallin' all in love
And that I hate her
At 17 she's just like me when I was 17
So I don't blame her

Du-du-du-du-du
What are we going to do?
Du-du-du-du-du-du
What are we going to do about it?

Remember when we used to be
Everything they’d ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It’s like it happened over night
We’re always wrong
They’re always right
We used to be the ones breaking the rules
Now we’re just mothers
And we’re just fathers
Of teenage daughters

She rolls her eyes when I'm funny
But she's sweet when she wants money
And her freedom
Oh my god she's got a car
Swears they won't go far tonight
Wish I believed her

Du-du-du-du-du
What are we going to do?
Du-du-du-du-du-du
What are we going to do about it?

Remember when we used to be
Everything they’d ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It’s like it happened over night
We’re always wrong
They’re always right
We used to be the ones breaking the rules
Now we’re just mothers
And we’re just fathers
Of teenage daughters

They're beautiful, wild and free
Everything we wish we could be
Life gets too crazy
Oh, you know they can make us crazy

Remember when we used to be
Everything they’d ever need
We had them believing we were cool
It’s like it happened over night
We’re always wrong
They’re always right
We used to be the ones breaking the rules
Now we’re just mothers
And we’re just fathers
Of teenage daughters
Yeah, teenage daughters

I ain't complainin' but I'm tired
So I'm just sayin' what I think
And if we're bein' honest and honestly
I think I need a drink

"Teenage Daughters" song overview

"This is a song inspired by my real life! I was writing with the Warren Brothers and Brett had the idea to write a song with this feel. We wanted it to feel kinda like “Me And Bobby McGee.” He started singing the words in the first verse and it was going to be about stuff that was going on in the world and how it’s all about the perspective you have on things. Well, Delaney and I were going through what she refers to as “a bit of a rough patch,” meaning I probably didn’t hear her and she thought I was ignoring her, or maybe I didn’t agree with her plans for the evening or something. You know, typical stuff. John took her to school that day and when he got home he asked what was going on and I said, “What do you mean?” He said, “In the car, Delaney said, ‘Mom hates me.’ I actually laughed and told him that was obviously ridiculous and I had no idea what she was talking about.” I told the Warrens this and I was just explaining what a trip it is to have a teenager. You go from being the center of their universe… they think you are cool and hilarious and they will do silly things with you…to feeling SO not-cool! It’s not for the faint-of-heart! And not only are you now just the “parent,” you really DID used to be cool. A little rebellious. Daring. YOUNG! Well, they definitely don’t see you that way. You are just mothers and fathers…of teenage daughters. So I said, “That’s what we should write about!” And about 45 minutes later we had a song. It came so easy and it was so much fun to write. We had a lot of laughs that day. When we finished, Delaney walked in and we played it for her… she loved it. I wanted to make this record kinda reckless and not too polished. That felt like the right way to sing it too. This song is fun to do live…I see so many people nodding their heads and smiling in agreement! The cool thing is, teenage daughters like it too!" - Martina McBride
