"This song was special from the start. I was in the studio working on something else (I can't remember what) and suddenly these words came to me...."I'd risk the fall just to know how it feels to fly" I LOVED that concept. Those opposites of falling and flying are so powerful! There's something about using opposite spectrums in songs that really make them understandable!
Anyway, later, at home in the shower, more opposite words start pouring out like "so strong it makes u feel weak" or "so sure it gave you cold feet" so I ran to the piano and start to figure out what does this song SOUND like. The chords and flow began that way.
I took it to the studio and started to work on it. Started falling in love with it. Krucial came in and I played it for him to bounce the idea off of him. He challenged me a bit on the melody, wondering if it could be stronger. Originally it had a little more of a mono tone slightly rap sing flow on the verse. And I LOVED it that way. I was MAD when he suggested I change the melody but I respect his opinion and decided to give it a try and it actually did create a more memorable part. We vibed on the rest, the B section etc., and when we got to the chorus I already KNEW the tag line was "I'd risk the fall just to know how it feels to fly." I was SOLD on that, but what else would go with it?
I had some more "opposite" thoughts and we went back and forth and back and forth pushing to find the right words to say. Pens and pencils scribbling on papers and scratching out, scribbling again and searching, searching. Finally it came "hope my wings don't fail me now..." !!!!! GORGEOUS!!!!
And it all tied together to become
"I'm flying high
don't wanna come down,
hope my wings don't fail me now
If I, can touch the sky,
I'd risk the fall, just to know how it feels to fly"
And that feeling! That feeling of trying your best, and giving it your all no matter the outcome is exactly "How It Feels To Fly"!!"
