"Alps" album reviews
Over the course of two EPs and as many years, Russia’s Motorama have been quietly cultivating their own personal Joy Division revival. Right off the break, these Factory fanatics were writing circles around long-standing post-punk conventions, though I don’t think anyone would argue that the results weren’t often rigidly similar to the well-loved architects of the genre. Perhaps that’s why the band went into the studio and recorded Alps, an album that blows the doors open on their approach, allowing them to step further out of the shadow of their lineage, as the bleak, bass-driven arrangements give way to songs built around warm, comforting blankets of keys and guitars.
And those guitars? Oh man, are they ever a thing of beauty. At times they ring out with balearic levels of easy-breezy, gracefully rising and falling like a majestic antelope bounding through the musical meadows of your mind. Paired with the mellowed, less affected delivery of vocalist Vladislav Parshin, everything comes across much more romantic than vampy (I dare you to listen to Wind in Her Hair and not swoon just a little), especially in comparison to the bulk of their most recent effort, 2009′s Bear EP. And as much as I do enjoy a solid soundtrack to draining victims, this softer, but no less animated Motorama is the one that’s truly firing on all cylinders. It’s the one that’s going to be remembered for a hell of a lot more than being a perfectly acceptable re-creation of one of rock’s most influential bands.
